Technology Explanation [Episode-02] :: What is Ray Tracing?

Tech2Time community, how are you all? Hope everybody is well. As always, I have come up with a new post. Today we will discuss about Ray Tracing.

What is Ray Tracing?

Ray Tracing is an advanced computer graphics technology. Ray Tracing helps computer graphics work in the same way that light works in real life. The origin of this great technology is to make computer graphics a reality.

In the past, Ray Tracing Limited was used not only in Hollywood movies but also in modern games. Hopefully, Ray Tracing technology will be seen in gaming consoles very soon.

Ray Tracing To put it more simply, you will find so much difference between computer graphics and video, the religion of light in reality or video is directly copied here.

Users are currently very optimistic and excited about Ray Tracing. To find out why people are interested, you need to know the difference between the traditional Rendering Method Rasterization and Ray Tracing, Rendering Method.

Rasterization vs Ray Tracing

Modern real time computer graphics are great! Today's graphics are quite difficult to match with the basic 3D graphics of twenty or thirty years ago. Basically, consoles like the PlayStation 1 and the current PlayStation 4 render 3D graphics using the basic method and display it on our 2D screen.

This method is called Rasterization. In Raster, the images are displayed in Grid pixels on your screen. So Rasterization is the process of converting 3D scenes to 2D and displaying them on your screen.

All you need to do is display the virtual movements of 3D objects on a 2D screen. Rasterization actually determines how the scenes will be displayed to the user.

Let's explain things in a simpler way, we know that there are certain religions of light, such as the formation of a shadow when light falls on an object, its reflection when standing in front of a mirror, etc. So programmers follow some tricks or shortcuts in Rasterization method to keep the religions of light consistent in computer games. So that the scene seems real to some extent.

In Ray Tracing, the religion of light is copied directly without any tricks or shortcuts. This means that in real life, just as sunlight casts shadows on an object, so does computer graphics through Ray Tracing. Suppose a video game has a car made of clear glass, Ray Tracing will show the reflection of the objects on the opposite side in a more real way.

In real life, the light rays in your eyes bounce off everything you see before they reach the retina. This is done efficiently in Ray Tracing. The camera captures the scene of the light rays and it is bounced in the virtual scene. Your screen works like a virtual eye and everything looks real.

Using Ray Tracing is a single technique to create objects, reflections, shadows and elements in a way that looks real.

Use of ray tracing

Ray Tracing has already been used in some Hollywood movies. Toy Story 4 is a whole movie but made through Ray Tracing. You can watch the movie to know how to make Ray Tracing scenes more real.

You can also enjoy some limited Ray Tracing games with the RTX series of Nvidia graphics cards. However, the problem is that RTX GPUs are quite expensive. However, it is expected that Ray Tracing will be available on the upcoming gaming consoles.

How to achieve it

Any computer can render 3D scenes using Ray Tracing. People who work with 3D rendering packages have been doing this for years. Any modern CPU can make the necessary calculations to detect the path of light around the scene.

However, modern CPUs and GPUs cannot quickly calculate numbers to create an image in real time. In Monsters Inc or Toy Story movies, computers took hours to render the final scene in a single frame. But in the case of games, it will not be acceptable because the game has to be played in real time.

Modern video games set a standard of 60 frames per second, but to play fairly, you need to create at least thirty frames of images per second. Now the big question is will Nvidia RTX be able to run games by maintaining Ray Tracing in such a short time? The answer is that they will not use Ray Tracing in all games.

They will actually work in conjunction with conventional graphics. RTX cards have dedicated Ray Tracing hardware that works with traditional GPUs. Here Ray Tracing will work to avoid the limitations of traditional graphics hardware.

There is a video game that you can play with RTX card which is completely Ray Traced and it is Quake II RTX. This is a decade-old video game that makes Real Time Ray Tracing easy enough. However, it will still take years for Ray Tracing to be applied to current video games, and for national hardware to become mainstream.

What is the future of Ray Tracing?

Ray Tracing is definitely the future. The hardware on which Ray Tracing is possible is becoming more affordable day by day. It is hoped that in the future, the usual rendering will be replaced by Ray Tracing. The day is not far when Ray Tracing will be available on all types of Game Consoles.

Game developers are already mentioning the Ray Tracing feature in their games. Because in future all platforms will make it available. Now the hardware is expensive but gradually they will become affordable.

Another sign that Ray tracing will be more available in the future is that Ray Tracing is being added to the tools that are currently used to create games or animations.

Should I buy a Ray Tracing device now?

Even as this tune is being written, the first generation Ray Tracing hardware is available in the market and the price is much higher. As hardware will become more affordable and more features will be added in the coming days so you can buy the next generation of Ray Tracing hardware.

Last word

As technology advances, we can see changes in conventional things, but in the case of graphics, Ray Tracing is said to be bringing about groundbreaking changes. The problem that was small in graphics in video games is expected to be solved through Ray Tracing.

In Ray Tracing we can see the graphics of games and movies in a more vivid way. Although Ray Tracing hardware is quite expensive now, it will not be too late to get it.

Please tell us what you think about Ray Tracing.

Stay well until today, like today, until the next post. God is Ha-Fez.
